Have alot of old silverware,not really good for eating with. Any Ideas?
I saw these "spoon animals" in a catalog, but i have never soldered before, and don't know what I would have to get; also using utensils as hooks, but don't know what type of drill to go through the metal, to put a nail in to attach to a board.
can anyone help? They kinda look like silver, but the finish is uneven.
Before you decide to make crafts out of your silverware, you should find out if it is silver or not. Most modern (post-1900) American silver is marked clearly. It will either say "sterling" or 925 (which means 925 parts of silver per thousand -- the equvalent to Sterling, just a different system of nomenclature. If it is English or European, there are other methods of marking it that are also relatively easy to determine.
If you have "real" silver, you will probably get a lot more out of it as scrap than you will as crafts. Look in your yellow pages for silver dealers and ask if they are willing to take a look at what you have and if they would be interested in buying whatever silver you have as scrap. The value of silver is about $15/troy ounce, but they will pay you less than that because they have to pay the fees to have it melted down and purified. I'd say about 9 or 10/t ounce is a decent price.
If the items are silverplate or stainless (or any material other than silver) then have fun with your crafts. I haven't seen the items you're talking about, but if you have to drill through it, any multi-purpose drill bit will do the job. Keep the bit lubricated with oil to reduce the wear and heat and keep your bit sharp and useful for a longer period of time.
