how to control the pain when my contractions start?
when contractions started with my first baby, i panicked basically and i had a quick labour but i didn't really deal with it very well. my son was on a mission to get out and i believe this is because i was so stressed, i spent the whole morning rolling about on the bed cos i couldn't believe the pain, i was also sick a couple of times. my contractions started at 9am i was in the hospital at 2pm and had him at 5.30pm, but i had to have quite a big cut and forceps as he was stressed and trying to come out before my body was ready, he was 7lb 7oz so average size. i only had gas and air.
now i am pregnant again 7 months now, i want to try and deal with the first stage of contractions better, so when i get to the hospital i will feel less stressed as i wasn't in a very good mind set.
any ideas would be great, like breathing or exercises or anything really!
It's normal to panic and it's unlikely your son was on a mission to get out due to your stress. It's more than likely that your son was just on a mission to get out regardless of your stress and when labour happens quickly it does cause a lot of stress and because you don't have time to really think about the pain and breathe through the contractions you end up even more stressed.
Remember that just because your first labour was traumatic doesn't mean that will be the case the second time around. This time you may not need an episiotomy or a forceps delivery. Second labours are statistically faster naturally (it can vary if you're induced with Syntocinon etc).
The best thing to do is to start exercising your pelvic floor muscles now and practicing breathing techniques. Breathing techniques don't help for everyone and you have to get through it the way you have to get through it. It doesn't matter whether you have a natural birth, gas and air or go the whole hog and have pethadine and an epidural; if it helps you deal with the pain it's best for you.
Giving birth on your back can put more pressure on your spine and hips making delivery longer and more painful. Try moving around with the contractions, bouncing on a birthing ball, taking a warm bath, considering a water birth in a birthing pool, rocking back and forth on all fours, delivering on all fours and a massage. Counter pressure on your back works wonders with back labour, too.
You don't know how fast or hard labour will be this time around. The general rule is that your second labour is shorter and 'easier' but this isn't always the case. You may find you cope brilliantly on your own or you may find you're rolling around in bed again and unable to do all the things you planned.
Listen to your body and go with the pain. Focus on overcoming one contraction at a time and when the contraction hits it's peak remember to breathe and tell your body the pain will be going away for a while now.
