How can I easily refinish a piece of furniture?
When my dog was a puppy, he scratched up the footboard of my cherry sleigh bed. There are some scratches in it that are pretty long and fairly deep-I'd say a mm or 2mm. But, he also took the finish off the wood in these spots, so you can see where the cherry wood is lighter underneath where it was stained on top. Is there any easy way to quickly just sand down the top where the scratches are and not the entire footboard, without it looking like possibly 2 different colors and ruining the piece? I have a king sized bed, so its very heavy and a pain in the butt to even move the mattress. But, my grandfather bought the set for me before he passed, so it holds a deep sentimental value and I'd like to fix it so it looks good.
The repair of scratches in cherry is easy except for one part, matching the color. First, you need to know exactly how the wood is finished. There are five possibilities:
Cherry wood, unfinished.
Cherry wood, stained.
Cherry wood, varnished (or coated with some substitute for varnish)
Cherry wood, stained and varnished (or coated with some substitute for varnish).
Some wood other than cherry, stained to look like cherry.
I'll describe the most likely one of those, but if my assumption is wrong, this method won't work. In that case, ask another question. If you can't figure out how the wood is finished, take the bed apart and take the foot board to the hardware store and they will figure it out.
If the wood is cherry which has been stained, here's the plan:
1. Buy a small cherry board to use as a test board for various stains.
2. Buy the smallest can of cherry stain you can find and stain a small piece of the board (about the size of a playing card) following the directions on the can. If the result is the same color as your bed, go ahead and sand down the scratches on the bed, using 120 grit sandpaper. Then stain the bed with the same stain and the color should match well enough that the repair won't be noticeable.
3. If the color on your test board is not close enough, buy a can of some other color and mix one ounce of the new color with one ounce of the cherry stain. Test that stain combination on a new section of the test board. Choose the new can of stain by choosing a color which will move the cherry stain in the direction you want. The new color might be walnut to move more to the brown, mahogany to move toward a deeper red, maple to cut down the red with a bit of yellow, etc. You can also change the ratio from 50/50 to any other ratio. Keep experimenting until you get the right one. The help of a friend who is an artist who mixes paints would be a great help.
