Twin Converted Bunk
Guest room/future children's room?

My husband and I don't have children yet but we have 2 empty bedrroms. We want to make one into a guest room but would like to buy furniture that can one day be our children's. I'm undecided about if I should get two twin beds, one full size or bunk beds (maybe a bunk bed with a full under it, or a futon) or maybe 2 twins that can convert to bunk beds....? The room is small, 10x12 feet. Any input?

Your first consideration should be how often your guest room will be used. Next consider who your guests will be. For instance if your over-night guests are often couples, they might not be thrilled to be on a bunk bed. A child can sleep equally well in a twin bed or a queen size. Futons are rarely comfortable for more than a few nights in a row, so if you opt for a futon for now, be prepared to relocate it to the playroom or elsewhere in your home when you do have a child old enough to make the switch from crib to bed.

Because you are planning to have children and want to make the most of the furniture you will be buying now, consider that you will have to be able to fit a crib (and other baby gear) into the room for at least two years, so you might decide against a Queen Size Bed unless you have somewhere it can be stored for as long as there will be a crib, changing table, etc. sharing the room.

Bunk beds are only good for children over 5 yrs old really because even though a 3 yr old can easily climb up to the top, it is not always practical for mom & dad. Can you imagine having to climb up to the top bunk multiple times in one night -- to tuck a child in & cuddle for a few minutes, then because of a nightmare, then because of a lost teddy bear...

The best answer to this question is different for each household because it depends on how often the room will be used now, as well as what storage space is available for once a crib goes into the room. Good luck!
