How to re-paint/stain furniture & cabinets?
I would like to update some wooden chairs and cabinets in the house. They are stained wood, possibly oak, with a finish and I'd like to get them darker to a walnut or chocolate brown color.
What is the best way to go about this? Do I need to remove the varnish or treatment with something before sanding the surface down? Is a primer necessary? What would be the best type of stain or paint? (ie oil, latex, etc.)
Also, the cabinet doors are solid wood but the cabinets themselves look like a laminate surface. Is it different to re-finish those surfaces?

If you want to re stain them you will have to get the varnish off first. Either by a stripper or sanding or both.I have found that a gel stain works good to even out the color, followed by 1-2 coats of semi-gloss polyurethane. And if you want to paint them. First sand the gloss off the wood it is not necessary to get all the varnish off, just a good smooth surface, followed by a coat of a good quality oil based primer. Then a light sanding. Then 2 coats of 100% acrylic latex semigloss paint
